Snow Play
Mt Buffalo and Dinner Plain both offer FREE resort entry.
Mt Buffalo will be your closest option for snow play and cross country skiing. In good driving conditions it will take about 45 minutes. We recommend checking out the snow cam before you go as the lower altitude means that snow is not always sufficient for tobogganing. You will also need to check the road conditions daily to find out if chains need to be carried. Carrying chains is compulsory for all other resorts. Dinner Plain is about an hour and a half drive away (depending on road conditions) and makes an excellent alternative for a day of snow play. The snow play area has a dedicated toboggan run, and a tube park; new for 2015. There is also a beginners poma with cheap tickets for those who just want to give it a go. Hire facilities are also available within DP Village to save you needing to carry everything on and off the mountain. Take the time to explore the alpine village of Dinner Plain with several businesses offering shopping, food, and relaxation at the DP Onsen. Mt Hotham and Falls Creek also offer snow play areas. You will need to pay a resort entry fee of $45-$51 per day for parking. Mt Hotham is about 10 minutes from Dinner Plain. The snow play area is located at Possum Flat heading towards Dinner Plain. Parking is available adjacent at Wire Plain. Alternatively the free village bus from Hotham will take you to transit stop 11 immediately out the front. The resort entry fee is required any time you do not travel through the resort from gate to gate. Falls Creek is about an hour and a half drive away via Mt Beauty. The snow play and tobogganing area is located at the far end of the resort at Windy Corner. There is a day shelter available at the car park to escape the weather, with toilet and shower facilities and a small cafe. Catch the free Village bus to the bottom Gully car park and ride the Gully chairlift for FREE up into the Village Bowl. Here you can experience a taste of village life with cafes and snow tubing on offer. Pete the Snow Dragon performs a free show for the kids here at 4:30pm on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Skiing and Snowboarding
Mt Hotham and Falls Creek both offer excellent skiing. Mt Hotham has some spectacular terrain while Falls Creek is better known for its wide open runs; a good option for families and novices, with more advanced runs also on offer.
All lessons at Falls Creek start at the top of the Falls Express chairlift located at Slalom Plaza. Allow an extra 20-30 minutes to organise tickets (if not already done) and get to your lesson in time. Hire facilities are available on both mountains, although to maximise your day on the snow we recommend organising hire and lift passes the day before at one of the many local hire shop along with your snow chains. Carrying chains is compulsary for both resorts. |
